23 January 12, Almost 800 Primary Teachers to Retire

The latest figures available to the INTO indicate that almost 800 primary teachers are scheduled to retire between December 2011 and 29th February 2012.

These posts will be filled in a temporary capacity until the summer in accordance with current DES circulars. Many will be filled through redeployment panels, including temporary teachers with supplementary panel rights.

In Budget 2012 the government announced an additional 250 primary teachers will be recruited next September to cater for increased enrolments.

Both these developments hold out the prospect of better employment opportunities for recent and new teaching graduates this year. Teacher employment was a major theme at INTO Annual Congress 2011.
